Hershey is a male American black bear (Ursus americanus) born in 2008. When Michigan humane law enforcement officers confronted a man walking Hershey on the street, the man tried to convince officers that it was his pet dog. The officers were neither amused nor fooled, and quickly arrested the man, confiscated his bear, placing little Hershey in the Michigan Humane Society. Knowing they could not care for him forever, MHS began searching for a forever home for the young bear, and eventually flew him down to Noah's Ark in late 2008. Hershey has grown into a very handsome bear, and loves using every inch of his large, natural habitat. He loves playing in his creek with his indestructible toys, peeling bark off dead logs to find bugs, digging holes to lounge in, and playing with big branches. He has a very goofy, playful disposition, and can often be seen lying in his hammock playing with a plastic “tire” toy. His favorite enrichment item is the “bear piñata”, which is simply a hay filled burlap sack with a few hidden fruits stuffed inside it. He has a blast wrestling with the piñata until he reaches the goodies within!
