Meet Mr. Smith
Mr. Smith is a neutered male Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) who came to Noah’s Ark as a 3 year old in 2008 from an extremely cramped breeding facility that also calls itself a zoo. Although the animals were kept clean, their enclosures were small and barren and they all lived on concrete, which can cause a host of medical issues in big cats. Mr. Smith was an extra tiger at the zoo waiting whatever fate would bring his owners the most money. He didn’t even have a name. The zoo was so overcrowded and strapped for resources that when Noah’s Ark offered to transport and provide a home for the unnamed tiger, the man agreed. Mr. Smith is a fascinating, dynamic tiger who at one minute will chuff and affectionately rub his face against the fence for his keepers to scratch, and the next minute roar at volunteers working in an adjacent enclosure. He is very stoic and would rather patrol his territory than play with a toy, although no tiger can resist a cardboard box! He lives with Gabby, a female Bengal tiger, and his calm and confident demeanor played a huge role in Gabby’s transformation from an aggressive, terrified animal into a calm, playful one.
