Red Foxes have long snouts and fur covering their entire body. You may have noticed, when looking at our foxes at the Ark, that not all Red Foxes are red! They can be a wide variety of colors, from gray, white, brown, and red. All red foxes have long bushy tails and lots of fur to keep them warm in the winter. Their thick fur coats shed during the warmer months, with small clumps of fur coming off of their coats on their own. All red foxes have a unique white tip on their tails, regardless of what color the rest of their coat is.

Foxes make unique sounds that range from hissing, high-pitched squealing, and short duck-like sounds. These sounds are made often when foxes are defending their territory, playing, fighting, or mating.

Foxes have an excellent sense of hearing, which allows them to hear low-frequency sounds, even being able to hear when rodents are digging underground.

Red Foxes mate in the winter and then stay in their dens for most of the time during the winter, where the pups are delivered. Litters can range in size from one to 12 pups per litter. The pups are taken care of by their parents for around a year, and then the foxes learn to live on their own.

Our Residents

Our foxes arrived in Fall 2024. They were all rescued from fur farms, through the Save-A-Fox organization. Fur farms discard the foxes when they become ill or injured, or do not have desirable coats colors or markings.
